NYSDI is New York State Disability Insurance. If you work in the state of New York, your employer is REQUIRED ... by New York state law ... to withhold NYSDI.

For the year 2008, your employer is required to tax you on the first $120.00 in earnings per week. There is very, very little in types of earnings that is non-taxable for NYSDI, but there are a select few types of employees that are NOT REQUIRED to pay NYSDI. They are teachers, agricultural labor, independent contractors and certain real estate brokers.

NYSDI tax rate is .5% of your gross earnings (not your net pay, also known as your take-home pay!) up to $.60 per week.

Note that if you itemize, that NYSDI is an ITEMIZED deduction under the TAX portion of Schedule A.
