US citizen living abroad since age 13
    Hi,
I'm a US citizen and I have been living abroad (Japan, Philippines and now France) since high school.
I am married and now reside in France (since 1984). I have never worked before until I started doing part-time home child care at home in November 1999.
I file what little taxes I might need to pay jointly with my French husbands tax form (to the French govt.).
Having never worked before this, and I have never lived in the US since, what am I required to do as far as US taxes are concerned? It never occurred to me that I needed to pay taxes since my part-time job is a french job in France.
Also, if eventually I can earn dollars online from a US LLC program, what would my status be for US taxes?
I appreciate any advice and information you can offer me.
I am totally in the dark about any of this.
    Thank you,
    Kasumi

If your total worldwide income exceeds the filing requirement, you must file your U.S. tax return. On your return, you must report your world wide income.

If you paid taxes in the foreign country, you will claim credit for taxes paid in the foreign country by filing Form 1116 or can file form 2555 Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.
It means that you must file and you may not owe any U.S. taxes.

I have never ever filed any income tax to the US.
How do I go about it now?
What information will I need to do so?
I should be able to find my SS card in my documents somewhere, do I need anything else? What is TIN?
Can all these things be downloaded from the internet?
Can they be sent through the internet too?
Sorry for my ignorance. I have never done this before.

You need to know your SSN. You can find it out from old records or from SS Administration. You can not get ITIN when you have SSN.

When you did not have any income or income is below filing requirement, then you are not required to file. Read 2008 filing requirements for most taxpayers http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/10/...for-most.html|

US citizen living/working abroad [ 1 Answers ]

I'm helping my sibling file her return. For 2006, she worked for a non-US company while living outside of the US. Her old job, a US-based company, issued a 1099-R for a distribution of about $1,200 in 2006. It's from a profit-sharing plan/pension paid out when she left the company in 2005. ...
