taxes on unclaimed property

If a person makes a claim and receives unclaimed property from a state treasurer, the state then issues a 1099 for the amount of the dividend earned on that unclaimed property. What about the amount of the original property? Does the taxpayer have to claim that amount or just the dividend amount on the 1099?

You need only report the dividend documented on the Form 1099.
