Tax refund in somebody's bank account for L1 visa holder
I have come from India to US on L1 visa for a period of 3 months.
I am going back now but the tax refund form needs to be submitted only in 2009.
I will be closing my bank account in some time since it is a checking account and once
the direct deposit is stopped, the account is chargeable with a penalty every month.
So the question is while filing my tax refund can I specify a relative's bank account details so that check is for that particular name and account?
Then I can get it transferred to India.
In order for direct deposit to work, your name must be on the account.
Otherwise, the bank will reject the direct deposit transaction.
The account does NOT have to be a checking account. I recommend that you open a savings account, which most smaller banks will maintain at no charge if you keep a minimum deposit. That way, you have an account into which the refund can be direct deposited.
Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I have my bank account in US still active.
I have returned to India.
Can you help me with the process of filing tax return for L1 from India.
You must file paper return. It is nonresident tax return form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.
If you give your India address and do not opt from direct deposit, IRS will mail you the check.
