Is Tax exempt for J1 visa nullified after two years

Hi experts,

I need an advice for filing the taxes. I am on an J1 visa in my first year paying both Federal and State taxes.

My payroll office suggested that I have an exempt from paying taxes the first two years but if I stay even a single day after the two years after my J1 visa entry date. I have to pay all the taxes from the date of entering into US .

Is it right.

Sasidhar

J1 visa holders are exempt from social security and medicare taxes for two years or 5 years for students.
About Federal and state taxes, it depends upon your profession and tax treaty between your country and the U.S.
If you are from India, then you must be Professor, teacher or researcher working for accredited university or recognized educational institution.
