Which state to pay taxes in

I am employed by a company out of NC, but my state of residency is TN (my house and family are there). My base of operations is in VA, and I commute (I am a pilot, so I am not there for long). Most likely, we will be relocating to VA in the fall. With which state am I responsible for filing income taxes?

Thank you.

I live in NJ and work in NY. I file income tax returns in both of those states. I believe you would be responsible for filing in TN because you live there and then whichever state your paycheck comes from. You say you are employed by a company out of NC, but if you are based in VA are you being paid by a branch or subsidiary of the company that is also based in VA?

JetTaylor1:

More than likely, your only state income tax liability is with Virginia (where you worked), because Tennessee has no state income tax, and, based on your post, you NEVER worked or lived in North Carolina.
