Social Security Disability and Joint Tax Return

Hi,

I was recently approved for social security disability. I am unable to work so the social secuirty is my only income, but my husband works. We have been filing a joint return in past years. If we do this again this year, will this make my social security income taxable? In otherwords, will his income effect the taxability of mine? Thanks for any help with this!

My son was on SSI for a few years and we did not have to claim it. No we did not have to pay taxes on the SSI monies.

JValentino1:

Adding your SSD to your husband's salary MAY make it taxable, so much so that filing separately may be advisable.

BushG:

It's different between a child and a spouse. The child is a separate tax entity. If your son had OTHER income, the SSD could have been taxable.

SSI is never taxable. But the SS disability and benefits may be taxable if the total income exceeds a certain limit. Then up to 85% of SSD payments may be taxable.
The base limit is half of the SSD plus all other income is around $32,000 for married filing jointly ($32,000 is figure for 2006).

Once again, MukatA's posting is better than mine!

I am getting an inferiority complex! :-(
