Married couple living in different states - OH and MA
My husband and I lived in Ohio for a couple years already. We are preparing 2010 tax return right now. He lived in Ohio from 1/1/2010 to 08/31/2010 (with income); then he found a job in MA and moved to MA since 09/01/2010 (with income). I lived in OH the whole year of 2010 (with income). We own a condo in OH since 2006 (which is where I live) and it has both of our names on it. My husband rented in MA since 09/01/2010. My question is if we file married file jointly for federal, how should we handle our state tax return for both OH and MA? Thanks a lot!

You file jointly on both state returns, and report all income on both returns, but you pay Massachusetts tax only on the Massachusetts income and Ohio tax only on the Ohio income.

The tax rate will be somewhat higher, but you will only be taxed on income earned within each respective state.
