Online W2s and 1099s

Asked Jan 25, 2010, 03:30 PM —
People seem to keep asking this question despite the fact that it has been answered many, many times.

If your W2 and/or 1099 is available online depends on whether the company or agency that issues the document makes it available online. The IRS doesn't. So the place to ask is the company or agency that will be issuing the document. If its a company, ask the HR or payroll dept. If its an agency then contact that agency.

Some companies make W2 information available to tax prep programs. When the program prompts you to enter the W2 info, they will ask if you want to check online. The tax prep program will then check to see if its online. If it finds it online, it will download the info and fill in the blanks.
