No W2 forms

Does anyone know how I can file a state tax return without w2 forms I sent a 4506 form to IRS requesting copies. They sent my check back and said this info was unavailable due to 7 years had past and they no longer have these records. I lost all personal papers in a tornado. I can't remember all places that we worked or they have gone out of business. State is keeping all my state refund for payment.

Am I right to understand that you are trying to file a State Tax Return for 7 years ago? ...and I for all years after then, too?

RainSoftly:

Contact the state and ask them for the data. They obviously have the data and will provide it to you if you ask with the intent of filing your return.

Once you get the printout, go to an experienced tax professional. He will have the needed software from that far back and can produce the returns relatively quickly.

RickJ:

What RainSoftly is attempting to do is not all that unusual. People simply forget or are unable to file for a couple of years for a variety of reasons, and then are afraid to come forward. More times than not, they do not owe taxes, but are due refunds which they lose if they don't claim them fast enough.
