Only in that you may not be able to deduct as much interest. You can only deduct what you actually paid during the year.

I am not sure we are sent anything for our taxes to submit. I get something but it says for my records not for filing purposes. Will the late payments result in me owing money ?

Your mortgage company is required to send you a statement of interest paid. Generally this is attached to one of your mortgage statements, usually the first one of the year. Do you itemize? Do you have someone pre3papring your return?

    Some points:

The portion of mortgage payments applied to the principle isn't relevant.

Except for points and some other loan origination fees, the relevant date for the deductible interest payment is the date the interest payment was made.

If you paid more than $600 in interest , the lender should be providing a IRS form 1098 statement indicating how much interest you paid early (usually in January) in the following year (see IRS publication 17 page 151 - available in PDF form from the IRS web site).

See Publication 17 page 149 for rules regarding "points" and other loan origination fees that might be deductible when you get a mortgage or distributed over the life of the loan.
