lost mail?

I filed my tax on April 8 via certified mail and have the receipt. I tracked the mail and it only shows up as being received at the post office (i.e., does not show as being delivered). Now... it's been more than a month since I mailed my tax filing and neither refund nor tax rebate has been deposited into my bank account. What should I do?

You can find the status of your refund on this government IRS web site

Where's My Refund?

If for some reason the refund has not been proceeded that will hold up the rebate

Yeah... I tried it but they say they cannot provide any information. I have a feeling that my mail never made it to the IRS.

Did you file your regular tax return or amended tax return. Amended tax return takes 8 to 12 weeks.

I would then call the IRS number ans try and verify, Also I beleive you can also send in another copy with a letter stating you believe the old lost, and copy of the tracing of the orginal letter.

MukatA: I filed a regular 1040A form. Should I call IRS first to find out what happened or should I just send them another form with a letter stating that I mailed my original filing before the deadline?

Koba:

You need to contact USPS to determine if the return was received by the IRS. If so, then contact the IRS.

If they have no record of receiving the return, ask if you should submit a second return. They may tell you to wait a bit, or go ahead and submit the second copy. FOLLOW the IRS instructions, because submitting a SECOND return will only cause confusion if the FIRST return is just being processed late.

I assume that you had a refund coming. If so, then just submit the second tax return.

If payment was made, has the check cleared?? If not, you can probably assume that the first tax return was lost. If the check DID clear, then get a photocopy of the cleared check and enclose it with the second return to show that you indeed paid the tax before the 15 April 2008 filing deadline.

Thanks Atlanta Tax Expert:

USPS could not confirm if the mail was received by IRS. All they see is that the mail was accepted at the post office on April 8. They claim that this does not necessarily mean that the mail was lost.

I was expecting a refund via direct deposit. Never received it and also never received the tax rebate (Iw as supposed to get it last week). How much longer should I wait before I call IRS? Should I try to call them right now?

Thanks for your help!

Call the IRS immediately. If the item was delivered on 8 April 2008, it has been the requisite SIX weeks since mailing.

I filed my taxes through Turbo Tax and got my refund direct deposited.

I found out last week that my rebate money will be sent via mail on May 16th. If it were to be direct deposited, I should've gotten my rebate money through direct deposit on or by May 2 becuase the last two of my SSN is 09.

So you might be getting a check for the rebate but I'm not sure.
