Living in jersey working in ny

Asked Mar 28, 2006, 09:17 PM — 1 Answer
Hi I also am about to move to new jersey and I would like to know what to expect from my taxes. I currently make 36,000 a year and I am married, no kids. Can I add my transportation to my taxes next year given how I will have to use both ny transit (trains) and nj transit?

You cannot deduct the transportation costs to and from work in NY from NJ. That is commuting and commuting is never deductible.

Have money withheld for NY taxes only. NJ gives you a credit for NY state taxes paid, and, since NY tax rates are higher, the credit completely offsets any NJ tax liability.
