Joint tax return non-alien resident and alien resident with form 1042s

Asked Feb 16, 2010, 08:20 PM — 3 Answers
Hi

My wife is an alien resident, but we just got married, so I am still a non-alien resident. We are intending to fill out joint tax return as alien residents. But my problem is I have both w-2 and 1042s forms. The 1042s reflects my income from a fellowship which has been taxed each month. The W2 form reflect other incomes though my graduate assistanship. So while I am trying to fill out the forms with software like Turbotax (for alien resident) there is not feature for entering my 1042s information. How can I file the whole thing?
Thanks

Mhjarahi, I am in the same situation as you./ Can you please help me? How did you file in 2010? My husband is a nonresident alien and I am a US citizen. We want to file jointly. He has both a w2 form and a 1042s form. Can we file together still? Do we treat the 1042s as a w2 form and include the income listed there as his income in addition to the income on the w2?Any help would be much appreciated!!!

You reflect the taxable fellowship income on the Form 1042-S on Line #7 of Form 1040 as wages.

Putting the information on the w-2 masque is ONE way to enter the data, but that way would probably NOT pass the edits to make the return eligible to be filed electronically.

There IS an alternative form for recording taxable fellowship income on the tax software I use (TaxAct), so I suspect TurboTax has something similar.

A phone call to Intuit (the company that publishes TurboTax) may provide an answer. The phone number can probably be found in the tech support part of the software.

Of course, you could email me at the email address in my earlier post and turn your return over to me, which would be another way to resolve the problem.
