    ITIN rejected for my children
    Hi,

I got a letter today from IRS that both my applications for ITIN for my dependent kids have been rejected. I had sent the notarized passport copies with the W7 forms.

Here is a snippet of the letter:

You indicated the reason you are submitting Form W7 is that you are a spouse or a dependent of a US citizen or resident. However, the US person's name and/or Taxpayer Identification number on your Form W7 application are not valid. Please submit a new application with a valid US person's name or TIN who can claim you as a dependent. Include a copy of your tax return clearly indicating it is a copy with valid and unexpired supporting identification documentation.
    ----
    ----
    ----

A valid Tax return submitted with a rejected Form W7 application for the dependent will be sent forward for processing. The dependent exemption will be disallowed.

    ---
    ---

Can you please let me know what that means and what could be the main reason for rejection? I and my family came to USA on 3rd July. I am filing jointly with my wife who has a SSN.

Please guide me on the next steps I should take?

    Regards,
    Sanjeev

Normally, you attach W7 with your tax return.

"However, the US person's name and/or Taxpayer Identification number on your Form W7 application are not valid."

You selected "d". Did you enter your name and SSN here?

Yes, I attached the W7 for both my children along with my Tax returns. I selected option d and had my name and SSN there. The spelling is also correct.

Call the IRS and ask them WHY they think your SSN is not valid. There should be a phone number on the IRS letter.

Yes, I check it this evening and got 2 responses from 2 different IRS reps -
1st Reply - He said I should have left the delegate box empty and only signed in the Application box.
2nd Reply - She said everything is fine on your application, just resend the old form with the rejection letter and they will relook at it.

Not sure which to follow. Why should we leave the delegate name empty as I am the parent signing on behalf of my child.

Yes, you sign in the Applicant box, write your name in delegate box, and check Parent.
