    I got 1042S after I finished filing my taxes + 1040 0r 1040NR?
    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am an international student (F1 Visa) from working as a teaching assistant. My country does not have any tax treaties with the USA. So far I filed my taxes twice. The first year I came I filed the 1040NR and got almost all my taxes back. This year, a friend of mine who helps me doing my taxes, file the 1040. I got part of my taxes back.

Moreover, after I filed and got that amount of money back, I received a form 1042S of 125$ for some prize I won and I forgot about!

When I called IRS to seek information on how shall I amend the new amount of income, I was asked what form did I file and I said that I filed the 1040. The response was that I should resubmit the amended 1040NR with the 1040X where I should include explanations on why I am amending. The problem is that if I do that I should pay a big amount of money back to the IRS

In the same time, the person told me that if I am planning to stay in the USA after I finish my studies, there is no problem in amending with 1040NR.

Please advise me what shall I do. I don't want face problems later on with IRS

BTW, aren't international student (NR non residents) supposed to get more payback?

    Thanks for your reply

There is no guarantee that international student will pay less taxes. It depends on the individual circumstances.

The IRS told you correctly that you must amend the return using Form 1040X and attaching a Form 1040NR to the return. You may want to get professional help in doing that.
