Do I need to file for State Tax return?

Hi,

I am a student on an F-1 visa from india. I earned around $3000 in the 2004 calendar year. I will file for my Federal Tax returns, but do i need to file for my State tax too?

I live in New York City, but my income was under the $7500 quota for a single individual.

It is my understanding that i don't need to file for state tax as my state (and federal) income was less than $7500. Am i right?

Thanks a million,
anuj_tm

Anuj_tm:

Due to your low income, you are not required to file a NY state income tax return.

However, if your employer withheld money from your check (as reflected on the bottom of your W-2), you will want to file a NY state income tax return to get that tax withholding back. Do not bother if the money withheld is less than $1.00.

The NY City tax return is embedded in the NY state income tax return.

Thanks for getting back to me,

on section 14 of my W-2, there's an entry "NY-SD 4.15"... i don't want to file for that return if don't have to.

So do have to file for a state tax return?

Thanks

The box 14 entry is for disability payments. Ignore it.

Are there any entries in boxes 15, 16 and 17??
