Filed 1040 using turbo tax instead of 1040nr

Hi,

My friend who is an international student and graduated this may (2007), found out that he had made a mistake and filed the form 1040 using turbo tax instead of the 1040nr for the year 2006. I think he received more refund than he was supposed to get using turbo tax. I don't know how much he has to pay back to the IRS if they indeed have refunded him more.
Now does any one know how and when he can rectify this mistake and what all forms he has to fill. Will there be any fines or penalties that will be incurred if he pays it back next year while filing for the year 2007?
Any help is greatly appreciated..

-c

He will need to amend his return using Form 1040X and attach either Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ PLUS Form 8843.

He will probably pay additional tax UNLESS he is from India, in which case it is likely no addedtax is due.

If taxes ARE owed, he MUST pay interest (mandated by law), but he can request a waiver of the penalties (25% of the taxes due) which the IRS normally grants if the taxpayer forward and admits his error.

If your friend needs professional help to do this, have him contact me at the email address below.
