Thread is a message board term that refers to the thread of conversation that follows a post. For example, you posted your question and I replied creating a thread. Any other replies will be part of that thread.
There is a FAQs page that has some info about using the site.
My advice is as follows:
1) Always check the dates of the original and last note. Many times newbies reply to notes that are very old.
2) Use the Search facility to try and find previous question that might already contain answers to your questions.
3) When posting a question use an appropaite category and provide as much info as you can.
