| A 30+ year-old mystery. Bluegrass ballad? In summer of 1976 I heard a song on pop radio in Reno, NV....it quickly became a favorite of mine, but I only heard it a few times...and I don't remember the female vocalist's name or the exact title of the song.... it's been haunting me for years, yet I can't find it anywhere. It had to be a B side of something else but apparently I'm the only living person who liked or remembered it at all.
When I got married I called the radio station very early in the morning and asked them to play the song for my happy day.....the DJ thought I was indeed strange to request such a downer of a tune, but he played it with an on-air chuckle anyway. To my knowledge it's the last time I remember hearing the song. It was August 21st.
It was about a young country girl who marries an abusive man in haste and goes with him up to his mountain home. When she realizes she's made a mistake she sneaks out one dark morning to escape down the mountain for the safety of the valley....the last lines of the song imply that she doesn't make it....but is lying dead in the early morning rain....or the misty mountain rain, after the man catches and dispatches her.
I've never met anybody since who remembers hearing the song and sometimes it just drives me crazy. |
