Roof not finished

Asked Aug 19, 2012, 06:09 PM — 10 Answers
I had the same problem with the roofer, only mine was more disasterous and dramatic. I hire a roofer to do my entire roof and new fence for 17,000. They promise me the job will be complete in 4 days. Now it was on the 10 days now my roof still not complete, and they tore my fence down 5 days ago and the fence still not up yet. I had 3 different types of felts on my roof, multicolor shingles, and the ridges on the edge look like a snake climbing on the roof. and they use nails for shingles to nailed my felt with the nail gun. What should you do if this is happened to your roof??? thanks for reply.

First, is the contractor licensed and insured? Second, do you have a written contract?

I would contact the local building department or licensing agency and ask them to check to see if the job is being done correctly. If you can get testimony it hasn't, then you can stop the job, file suit and hire a new contractor.

They fastened the felt with a nail gun instead of staples? And later attach the shingles with nails? So what? it got the job done, didn't it?

Be serious bro. Yours' comments just like those roofers. I really don't need those kind of comments now.

shingles are installed with nails, that is how they are done, how did you think they were going to attach them

4 days was never possible unless they a giant crew. And yes until they are done, the edges are not even and they come back and trim them.

Have you taken time to even ask them?

But it sounds like they are just taking longer to do the roof. You did not discribe a issue at this point expect they are slower than promised.
Do they have workers coming and show up every day.

No law suit just require it be fixed corrctly if not already being done that way

You will need an expert witness to tell you that there is something wrong with attaching felt with nails. I, for one, do not see the problem. And I speak from experience, having installed many such roofs. Sure, I wouldn't do it with nails, but don't see the problem. Attaching shingles with nails also penetrates the felt.

The example you give is not at all the same.

Maybe because, unlike the roofers, you know nothing about the subject.

I did ask proffessional roofers and they told me ," nail for tacking felt is different (they are smaller nails with rubber washer ) should be tacked with hammer not with the nail gun,you can use stapple for felt. What they done to my roof was adding more weight and damage my deck.Who knows how many nails shot through my roof deck when you use nail gun to tack the felt?????

A pound or three of nails is going to make that much difference?

Deck? You mean the wood (usually plywood) under a pitched roof? If the wood is that rotten it should have been replaced anyway.

But we digress. Our disagreement is not a matter of law. If you can get an expert to testify that using a nail-gun instead of staples somehow makes for a more leak-prone roof, or that it won't last as long, you may have a case.
