Home owners Association

When my husband and I moved into our house we were struggling financially. We were unable to pay many of our bills which included our home owner association dues. Now their lawyer is sueing us and has gotten a judgement for us to pay the dues plus late fees and his fees. We are fine with paying the past due association dues and late fees but which is around $200.00. But with his attorney fees we are facing a total of $3000.00. We cannot possibly pay this. He has offered a payment plan but I dont want to pay his outrageous legal fees. Is there any way to not have to pay this and still keep our house. I was reading about judgment proofing, homestead proofing and finacial privacy. Would any of these be helpful to me? Or are there any other options? How do we accomplish this? Also he is asking for some sort of "discovery" asking about our bank accounts and irs information and assets. Can he do this? Why does he want this? I hope someone can help us. I am an 100% disabled veteran. Living off of disability payments from the VA and unable to work. My husband makes a modest amount at his job. Plus we have two children we are trying to support. I would really hate to lose my house to a lawyer over $125.00 association dues.
