10 Year old Debt

My husband got letters from a collection agency today. They were about a Credit Card he had close to 17 years ago. He was married and did not know that these amounts were on his bill. Is it legal to collect on a debt that is over 17 years old in Iowa.

Statute runs by the last time the card was active - a payment, a charge.

When was it last used, not when it was opened - ?

If the debt is outside the SOL, they can not longer sue him and report it to the credit report. But they may bill and call for the rest of his life to try and collect the debt.
