Starting Small Business

Hi,

I am starting a mobile oil changing business here in Spartanburg, SC where I go to the customer and change their vehicle's motor oil. I have several questions.

First, Do I need a business license and if so what kind?

Second, Do I need a federal tax ID number?

And third, What kind of insurance best covers both my assets and for liabilities?
Thanks. Nick

Hello Nick:

Good for you. I've heard a lot of wacky ideas people are going to pursue here. Yours, however, is down to earth - a real service business that I myself would buy.

I'd hire a CPA. Not only can he tell you exactly what licenses and insurance you need, he'll set up your books and your accounts so you start off on the right track. They can help a new business in a lot of other ways too.

The very cool thing about your local CPA is that he's very cheap. Believe me, you CAN afford him.

Licensing for such businesses is a local matter. You need to check with your local chamber of commerce or county clerks about that. You don't need a Tax ID, you can use your SSN if you plan on running the biz as a sole proprietership.

I would discuss insurance with a knowledgeable agent. You need to protect yourself from liability.
