I paid a flat rate of $22.00/hour plus materials and supplies.

It really would help to know where you will be doing this type of work in order to provide you with the best answers. Where will you be doing the work, please? Judy's answer of $22.00 per hour not including the cost of the materials or supplies would be just a little higher than around where I live. But, it's close for painting indoors where the surface area is perfectly flat, the edges would be cut in with a brush and then the paint would be applied with a roller and two coats are to be applied.

Most professional painters do charge by the square or linear foot. Also, the price will vary depending on the location, the manner in which the paint is applied, and the type of surface area that needs to be painted as well as what other preparations that need to be made, like damaged areas that need to be filled and smoothed out and any priming that might need to be done.

Would appreciate any additional information that you could give us concerning the particulars of the job that you are wanting to do.

    Thanks!

Professional painters do not quote by the hour unless they are a joke or some type of friend or family.

You have misused the comment feature and you are incorrect. He was a union painter, not a joke, not "some type" of friend or family.

Read through the other posts - other people have had the same experience/contract arrangement.

I always quote hourly. I've only been at it for 3 years and my jobs vary so much that except for roofing and plumbing, I'm not comfortable with quotes yet. For a painting job I'd only bring one other guy with me, and charge $12/hr for myself, and pay him $10/hr... so $22/hr makes sense to me.

This was posted in 2008 - if those are your prices today they were probably on the high side 4 years ago.

That's true Judy, however I noticed you're in New York? I'm in Georgia. Everything is cheaper down here, so I'm guessing our prices at present are around New York prices 4 years ago? How much they charging up there now?

Good point - just paid (last week) $25.00/hour, plus paint.
