    Hi, oriley!

How much cleaning experience have you already had working for others to make a profit for yourself, please?

Around where I live, a person who does cleaning in homes and/or offices might make twenty to twenty-five dollars an hour. Where you are asking about doing the work, I would think that the price would be substantially more than that. Say in the thirty to thirty-five dollar an hour range.

If you will put the two words, Clough, Cleaning into the search function at the top of this page, you'll find lots of threads where just about every aspect of starting and maintaining a cleaning service of any kind has been addressed.

    Thanks!

In the Chicago area it was about $15 per hour and that was a loaded rate about two years ago when my wife sold her house cleaning business, she had about 55 homes.

Possibly it is much more competitive near larger cities as there are many more companies. This is sad as this fact contributes to the lower hourly rate. The $15 is an average that most companies here used and the rate that she used for the most part. However some of the national companies charged as much as $20 to $25 an hour.

You could very well be correct about the competition thing, Stringer. I was presuming that the rate would be higher in the larger cities, but I would seem to be incorrect.

There are a number of unknowns here, and that would be whether oriley is wanting to do the work or hire someone to do it and whether the question is about the work being done by a cleaning service that employs many people or just one person doing the work that isn't employed by a cleaning service.

I was basing my prices off what the larger cleaning operations around where I live charge the customer. If someone around here is working for one of those firms, then they don't make near the prices that I quoted.

I can see where you would think that and it makes some sense. But the competition is who*ish as you get nearer the Chicago area, anything within say 50 to 60 miles. It is a shame that it is like this, but you have people/companies that don't know how to sell other than "kill the price." There is soooo much more to this than that, but they never learn it seems. Value and personal relationships along with a good service reputation will always prevail at least in the commercial side. Do what you say you will, after all that is what the client is paying you to do. So do it to the very best of your abilities... bottom line. Never make excuses either.

Among other reasons this was one of the driving reasons that my wife sold her company after four years. Another, and I have to say humbly that I am proud of this one, is that I have had some success and she didn't have to "work" any more. She wanted to go back to college anyway and now that is what she is doing... However she started without any customers and when she sold it four years later she had over 55 homes and six employees.

Another thing, one primary difference between residential and commercial cleaning is; people in commercial are usually not spending their own personal monies. Clients in the residential market use much more austerity. My wife said that there were some people that would pit one company against another over $5.00 per cleaning... not quite so bad in commercial.

    Hope I helped you.

Thank you all for your response, it was of great help, although I am having a hard time with the monthly price for 2 or 3 x per week, for instance; If I charge .22 per sq ft of office space, I come up with a monthly charge, correct? Then if I clean the office 2, 3 or 4 x per week, do I just divide the monthly charge by 5, ( 5 being days in a work week). Then if I were clean 3 x per week would I add the charge per day x 3 days a week cleaning x 4, (4 weeks in a month), to come up with a monthly price for 3 x a week cleaning? I live in Texas. I have cleaned apartments, but have not yet started cleaning office space. Once I get pricing down , etc. I am hoping to start office cleaning. Much thanks

Simply come up with a daily cost/price and then multiply that time the number of days per week then X 52 weeks and divide that by 12 for a monthly charge.

You should really start your own question thread though.
