Self tanner safe to use for melasma?

I have melasma on my cheeks and I would like to use a self tanner on all other areas except my cheeks.Does anyone know if this is safe? I dont want to do anything to make the melasma worse. Its been a 2 yr battle and I am starting to make progress using light tri-luma" once a week, taking vitamins and stopped eating processed sugar.
