    Patio doors in gable end
I want to install a patio window on the ground floor of a gable end wall. Can this be done safely?

You say patio door and then patio window. Which is it? Typically gable end walls are non bearing. However, you need to check to be sure. You can have a door or window in a bearing or non bearing wall, they just need to be framed differently.

    Brain nailed it.

This is a structural change and should be recorded with building dept. They will tell u what is acceptiable in your area.

In most cases they will require a header and jack studs sized for opening.

    Good luck
