18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine
I have a 42" Craftsman riding mower with a 18.5 HP B&S engine. It started using oil suddenly a couple of weeks ago. The compression is 120#. What could be the problem?

Also after it has been running for about 10 minutes, it shuts down. It does this with fresh fuel, new plug, clean gas tank, new fuel and air filters. Sometimes it restarts and at other times it won't. What could be causing this problem?

    The engine is, model-31P777, Type-0299E1, Code-04805ZD.

    Thanks, George

    Hi,
You have a single cylinder Intek OHV and they are fairly dependable other than needing that single valve adjustment after the initial run-in period.
A oil use situation on this engine would seem to say that air is getting in the crankcase from somewhere during the piston's upstroke and blowing oil beneath the rings on the downstroke. Anything other than 30W will be used at a higher rate. 5W30 should be terrible.
You could try changing the oil a couple of times in quick succession to see if it helps.
These engines want the first oil change in 25 hr. or rhey get premature wear.
The cutting off is indicative of either fuel filter or ignition. I know that does not sound like it helps; but you can watch the fuel filter refill immedaitely after shutdown from built up vacuum if it is the cause. 10 minutes is a little quick for the ignition.
    Peace,
    Clarke

I have 18.5 intek troy built and the gas was getting in the oil and the oil has been drained and an inline shut has been installed. The oil still has some gas smell and is clean the filter was also changed. It will run fine for about 10 minutes and start pouring out the smoke and backfires and I have to shut it down. What should I do now to remedy the problem change oil and filter again or has the engine been ruined.

I went to start my riding mower for the first time this year and when it started is smoked real bad. I turned it off and checked the oil, it was over filled. I went to drain the oil and discovered it had gas in the oil. It ran fine last year, but I didn't drain the gas out at the end of the season....
