I think we need a little more context before we can give a definite answer. What religion? How does it look after the environment? Who said this, and what we were they talking about? You get the idea, I hope.

While Christianity does specifically teach stewardship, it is not the only religion out there that does. Religion is certainly not required for environmental stewardship.
I guess I'm really failing to understand why you don't see how ones beliefs motivate them towards certain actions.

The reason for the question in home work is that there is no right or wrong answer. The teacher wants you to pick your opinion and view point and then document why you feel that way.
I could write a paper saying yes, and quote the Quran or the Bible or even American Indian religious beliefs.
I could write a paper from the view point that religion does not control mans use of nature and so on.
It is yours to chose

What does any spiritual belief have to do with looking after the environment? Maybe if someone has proof that it does I will change my point of view on the subject!

Christianity does not have anything specifically to do with the environment. The only real reference is in the book of Genesis where Adam was told to rule over The Earth and subdue it. I don't believe that was a licence to misuse the environment as is common today but Christianity has certain views about responsibility and stewardship and they also know that the Earth as it exists today will not survive. Christianity is about our relationship to God and as the Earth belongs to God we need to be good stewards of what has been placed in our care.

Personally, I think an all seeing , all powerful, all knowing, invisible god of any religion has finnaly been recognised by many people for what it truly is. An invention of man with all his insecurities, the hope that his god will look after him in times of trouble. Well its time to wake up and I...
