Both will work, you can't disable the laptop primary keyboard.
Unless you physically go into device manager and disable the device, but it will effect the external keyboard as well.

You missed plugging something else in.
Look for the inverter, which plugs into the lcd backlight with 2 wires and a white plastic connector.

Only thing you can do is run the laptop hot so the fan will engage.
Or take it out and put a 1.5 volt aa battery to it ansd see if the fan will spin.
