The actual purchase date from the receipt I have is August 1989. The model number on the B&S engine is 422437, Type number 1256-01. Model number on the tractor is 917.255919.

I'll check the idler pulley and see if I can adjust it. As I recall, I did have some slack in it when the clutch was release. Thanks for the input.

I meant when you start up. Certainly, the plug is a good place to check if the choke doesn't work for you.

Have you used the choke? If not, pull the choke so the butterfly valve in the throat of the carb restricts the air intake. If this works, ease off on the choke once it has started. I have noticed...
