Will The World End In 2012?
    Hello,
I don't know if this would come into the subject of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Everybody at my school is saying "why are us kids wasting the last 3 or 4 years of our lifes in school?" Today, I asked one of them what it meant, and they told me all about it. They said that the myan tribe ended a celender at 2012 and that everyone will die. So when I got home I asked Google, will the world end in 2012? The answers where mixed. But, when I went on Yahoo Answers, there was an answer that said that the world was predicted to end in 2000, and at that time I was only 4 so I knew nothing! I really hope that it doesn't end, are there any Astronimy Experts out there that can tell me I am just paranoid or is it true.
    Thanks.

Honestly, who cares because there's nowt we could do about it anyway.

Have a look at the related threads for further discussion on this subject..

The reference to the Mayan calendar has been over hyped and simply means an end of an age.
Think along the lines of the Industrial Revolution or the advent of the silicon chip.

Or if you want complete doom and gloom then watch the film, I warn you know it's pretty dire.

I am not sure if the mayan were on standard or central time, but yep, Dec 12 2012 at noon ( also not sure if they considered the leap years day, so it may be off a week or two)

Of course that is when the mayans where were actually space aliens come back to take the earth over

    Hi, Dougan123!

You might want to put 2012 into the search function of this site to see how many times this has been discussed here.

    Thanks!

My Calendar ends Dec 2009- oh no does that mean the world is going to end.

Same applies for the Mayan calender, it just ends!

The "Astronimy" experts can be called NASA ;)

Here is what they say about 2012.

NASA - 2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?

In short, NASA says "Don't be a dummy of course it's not going to end".

My takee: the world is going to end though... in a few billion years!

Sarah, please go out and buy a new calendar. I know we will miss you if you let your days run out!
Ah well see the thing is here I lied.

I've been using my 2007 calendar [what the puppies are cute]. This is why most of the time I think it's Tuesday when it's actually Thursday.

So technically my world ended in 2007, but I've sharpied the 7 into an 8 then the 8 to a 9...

Maybe this year I'll replace my puppies

    ...

Okay now you know my weird secret.

Has anyone ever thought that maybe the Mayan calendar maker's hand might have gotten tired? Or his boss said " Hey! That's enough! You went three or four hundred years too far!"

What do these people plan on doing to prepare? Are they stopping payment on mortgages? Are they NOT going to send their kids to college? Are they spending all of their money?

Whatever the date, December 22nd,23rd,or 24th, 2012, will come and go without even a bit of difference from any other day. And those people will be made fun of, just like the Y2K folks.

As individuals, our days are numbered. But there is only ONE who knows when the world will end. And for now, HE's not telling us a specific date.

I don't believe researchers actually understand the Mayan calendar as it's three calendars in one, insanely complicated, and there wasn't any complete (if any) manuscripts on how to read it; it's mostly guess-work.

Secondly, the "baktun", I think it's called, ends (and starts again), oddly enough, on the Winter Solstice of 2012 which is also the day of earth's precessional revolution, which I think it was stirred all the controversy. It could mean the absolute end, or the end followed by a new beginning. But like I said, it could be all wrong.

If it was known how the Egyptians built the pyramids, the Anglo-Saxons the Stone Henge, or what happened to Easter Island or even Roanoke Virginia I might actually believe this garbage.

Look at it this way: if the world DOES end, will it really matter to you? You'll end along with everyone else in the world, and none of us will know it happened.

On the other hand, do you want to look like an idiot if the world DOESN'T end? Just think of all those kids slacking off because they think the world will end. They'll regret it if the world doesn't end, like they're so convinced it will.

If the mayans were still around, they would've made a new calendar. 2000/+ years ago when they made the current calendar, they thought they would be around to make the next one. They were around to make the last however many calendars. Why plan ahead more than a couple thousand years? Future generations can take care of that.

Are YOU worried about writing out a calendar for the year 4000?
