If its wireless you access it with a ethernet cable and then turn on the security feature of your choosing. Just remember if your using a generated code then all things that access that will have to have the same code.

You need to worry about 2 levels of security...

The router password should be changed from the default. You do this within the administration page in the router. Second you add a password to your wireless so that only you (and approved others) can connect.
