Can someone define "hookup?"

Hey gang,

I am a middle-aged female that has been married for over half my life. I have heard the term "hookup" (in this case as a noun) used in a couple of different ways. I at first assumed it was a new term for boyfriend, but it also seems to mean someone who you have sex with but don't care enough about to call your boyfriend (or girlfriend whichever gender applies.)

This got my curiousity up on a different post that mentioned former boyfriends and hookups and I am just trying to make sure I understand what the modern use of the term is.

Thanks!

Usually a "hookup" is considered with some type of sexual content. Now, that isn't always true. It can deal with kissing as well.

A "hookup" is a type of fling. A sorta wham bam, thank ya ma'am sort of thing.

I hope this helped. =]

women and men in my opinion sometimes use it different...a hookup for a man might usually mean more than kissing and for others it may only be kissing

If I say I hooked up with this girl I mean something more than kissing

In normal usage now adays with young people, it is merely meeting someone, and just having sex with them, you go to a bar and meet someone you have not seen for a few years so you "hook up" ( have sex) with them.

You boy friend says not to worry, they just "hooked up" meaning they just had sex, no commitment.

It has been used for a few other things, but this is the most commom usage for the people I know
