Month to Month Lease question

I live in Virginia. I have given my landlord (and roommate) 5 weeks notice that I intend to move out. I asked to prorate the month because I am moving out on the 18th of the month. Our lease is month to month. We have never signed any lease agreement-just verbal agreement on amount of rent and deposit.

Do I pay him the full month, despite giving reasonable notice with no signed agreement? Also, would I be responsible for utilities that I will not use because I am moving out?

Thanks for your help.

You didn't even need to ask. With a verbal month to month agreement, your notice is sufficient, and you pay a pro-rate for the last month you are there...so when it comes time to pay November rent just pay 18 days worth.

Unless the utilities are in your name, you have no worries.

also keep in mind you may have already paid for your last month in full when you moved in. most places here in VA (richmond anyhow) even when month to month they require 1st and last months rent with or with out security deposit
