Tenant Notice in California

My boyfriend and I are on a lease specifying that, after the lease goes month to month, we have to give 60 days notice before moving out. We didn't pay much attention at the time of signing, but now that we're ready to move out, its proving to be a problem.

Given that we did sign the agreement, is it legal for our landlord to require us to give 60 days notice? It doesn't seem to make sense that we would have to give notice for longer than the term of the current lease. Help!
