Mold below my apartment

Hello,
I have lived in the same apartment for five years. I did not live in this region before, so I assumed that the allergy problems I've developed were due to the area vs. the building.

After having problems with my asthma many, many times, with many trips to the doctor for coughing, sinus infections, colds etc, I was finally tested for allergies in the spring and was found allergic to mold, dust mites and certain trees.

Here is my concern: My landlord just called me last week to see if I had had any leaks or overflows of water in my bathroom. My apartments bathroom is above the store front that is currently empty in the building. He specifically said he was asking me because there was mold growing all in the ceiling (under my bathroom). My bathroom has no windows as each wall is an interior wall, and no fan/ventiliation system installed. It doesn't even have heat in the bathroom. Also, there used to be inhabitants in the area he is talking about, which i know he is now fixing up. So I'm assuming he discovered this and is trying to blame it onleaks I may have caused (no leaks I know of). So, my question is, what steps do I take to ensure that this problem is being taken care of appropriately (getting rid of all of the mold) and do I have any legal rights for my medical bills/suffering since he has admitted to having mold in the ceiling under my bathroom This past year alone I was sick for 11 weeks and back to the doctor over 5 times (some times they called in prescriptiosn for me). I've had chest x-rays and other tests as well. I should also mention that my heating vents are in the floor, which scares me because wouldn't that mean mold spores could be travelling through them too?
