How to add spouse's name to deed on house

How do I go about adding my name to the deed on my home? It is only in my husbands name. We moved in the house together 28 years ago. We have been married 26 years. The house is paid for.

You both need to see a lawyer for starters. They will advise the best way to procede.

Chris7005 : Is that it? Kind of abrupt, don't you think?

If you want to have your name added to the deed then your husband has to prepare a deed from himself, as seller, to the two of you, as buyers. Then the deed has to be recorded in the county clerk or county register's office.

I strongly recommend that you have an attorney handle this for you. It should not be expensive and that way you will make sure that your intentions are carried out. For example, if you had followed the advice from Cvillecpm above, your husband would have transferred all of the ownership to you instead of adding you as an owner. It's easy to mess this up if you don't know what you're doing so you should have it handled by an attorney in your area if you want to be safe.
