When are you most fertile?

Asked Aug 22, 2007, 02:03 PM — 4 Answers
Some people told me that if you have sex exactly two weeks after and two weeks before your period that you will get pregnant. And how many days out of a month are you fertile?

I have always been taught that your most fertile time is during ovulation, which occurs for some women, not all, 12-14 days after your period.

Its different for every one….The statements above are correct. It is most common to ovulate 12-14 days after the first day of your period. You may ovulate early or late. So if baby making is not working a quickly as you may like you may want to try other ways to track you cycle.

We are most fertile approximately 12 - 14 days after the first day of our last period.

At ovulation the ovum (egg) is released from the ruptured ovarian follicle. Our estrogen levels rise at this point to to increase the motility of the uterine tubes so that their cilia (little hairs) are able to capture the ovum and propel it through the tube toward the uterine cavity. An ovum (egg) cannot move by itself.

Ova (eggs) are considered fertile for about 24 hours after ovulation. If unfertilized by a sperm in this 24 hours, the ovum degenerates and it reabsorbed back into our bodies.

Amazing we ever get pregnant isn't it.

Oh, yeah, my source for this info is Maternal Child Nursing Care, Third Edition, page 193.
