Swollen Cheek in 4 1/2 month old
Today I noticed that my son's eye didn't look like it was shut as much as the other when he was looking down. Then I realized that it was the bottom lid that wasn't closing as much. I pointed it out to my husband when he got home and we both realized that his cheek is slightly swollen. I'm not sure if he's teething right now, but he has rosey cheeks, drooling buckets, fussy, not sleeping well, and his normal once a day poopy diaper is now 3 times a day and loose. I haven't changed his diet. The last time I introduced a new food was last Thursday (squash) and he's had no problems at all. Has anyone's child had a swollen cheek due to teething, or is there another cause? I was with him all day today so I know he didn't hit his head or face on anything. If it's still swollen in the morning I'm calling the doctor.

I'm assuming you're breastfeeding. Are you vaccinated?

Swelling of the cheeks usually indicates the mumps, although it's fairly uncommon nowadays with the vaccine. If you've been vaccinated for mumps, then your child should have the antibodies through you until about 6 months of age.

I've personally have never heard of anyone's cheeks swelling due to teething... so I'm not so sure about that.

Any chance someone accidentally bumped his cheek?

Do call up the pediatrician... and let us know.

My son went through the same thing when he was teething so I'm going to say that this is probably what's happening. My son would get fevers too whenever a new tooth was coming through, we went to the doctor allot only to discover that he was teething.

Having said that, you know your baby better than anyone. Don't feel bad about taking him to his doctor if you're worried. Better safe than sorry.

In the meantime, try giving him a cool moist cloth to suck on, that might help ease the pain if he is teething.

    Good luck.

The drooling, restless nights, uncommon irritability, and increase in bowl movements is all a wonderful part of teething. Another fun side effect is that the stool is often much stinkier.

My son has recently picked up the swollen cheek as well, but it seems to be connected to an ear infection for him. It is often hard to notice an ear infection if it happens at the same time as issues with teething, so a visit to the Dr. might be in order. I wouldn't run off immediately to the emergency room, but if your little one's ears are red and feel warm then there is a good chance that he might have picked up an ear infection. They are apparently quite common in babas, something to do with the way the ear grows and the ear canal sits at a strange angle.

I see that this post is quite old so you've now over taken me in age of your baba ! Can you post your outcome for us to see please ?
