looking us in the eye

Our 9 week old doesnt look us in the eye for very long, but would rather look at an object on the wall or elsewhere. could this be a problem?

Does he laugh and act attentive to his surroundings in general or does he look at the objects more with a blank stare?
Does he seem to recognize what he is looking at?
Will he follow an object like a cat follows a spool of yarn?
Does he seem to have a personality and interact with people, toys or anything in anyway?

rvanaken agrees: He's very interactive. Just doesnt hold his glance on my face- must not be as interesting as the pictures on the walls! :)

a nine week old will not focus on much of anything for very long...their vision is not fully functional. babies at this age can only see basic shapes and shadows and very few colors until they are 3 or 4 months old...at this stage your baby can only see things 6-12 inches away from their face and very little at that. your baby will be most interested in objects that are black, white or red (strong contrast) and have geometric shapes or patterns. Dont worry, it is perfectly normal.

rvanaken agrees: Great! thanks so much. You are right- he stares at black frames on the walls and the side rails of his black crib!
