How to help 14 month old with speech and focusing
    Hi,
My 14 month old son has great motor skills but doesn't speak (may occasionally say dada or mama). He does not respond to his name, and only sometimes will stop and look back when his name is called. He does not points to objects when I ask him about face parts, dogs names, sometimes he looks in the dogs directions if I ask him where are they. If you get on your knees to his level and call to him to come to you he will run up with a big smile and jump in to your arms. He is happy to see other children at the playground and gets excited and babbles to them smiling. He likes to play with spinning objects, is good at putting shapes in objects throw a ball if asked, but gets bored quickly. Don't think he has a hearing problem, because he can find me in another room if I call out to him. I am very concerned about my son being A high functioning autistic child. I have made an appointment to see a pediatrician, but it will be another 4 weeks before we get in. Is anybody out there with similar problem? How can I help my son along while we waiting to see the doctor? There are moments when I know that he understands me by the way he stops to listen to me but not looking up with aknowledement. Please answer if you have any suggestions, exercises to help him along, thanks

I have a high-functioning autistic child (he's 41 now) and suggest you just be his mom and let him be your child -- play with him building block towers and pushing cars and trucks with the proper noises, read to him and point out things in the pictures, cuddle with him (does he mind cuddling?), use short and clear sentences with a calm but enthusiastic voice, play counting games and memory games on his level.

No matter what, you probably have a very smart little boy, so you want to give him every opportunity to develop his abilities.
