Can't Get Pregnant

Hi, I am 23 years old and my husband and I already have a daughter(he is no her biological father) and are trying for another. I have been off my birth control since about February but have not become pregnant yet. I know I am ovulating because I feel the pains during that time and my husband and I always make sure to have sexual intercourse during my ovulation period but nothing has yet to happen. Every time after we have sexual intercourse I go to the bathroom right away could this in anyway affect my chances of becoming pregnant(I know that sounds silly but I am hoping it could be something silly rather then serious) or have I not been off my birth control long enough or is it possible there is something wrong with me or my husband? Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Firstly it is important to know what kind of BC you were using.

Secondly, using the bathroom is actually healthy after intercourse as it prevents infection. Now I do not mean get up immediately and go to the bathroom, you should wait a few minutes, but it is important to help prevent infection also.

The sperm go up the vaginal canal, not the urethra (where the urine comes out). There are really two holes, so to speak, one is for sex the other is for urination.

Let's just start with what kind of BC you were on and go from there.

It is still early to begin to think that there is a fertility problem. You may have to be off of the pill for a while longer. It is still possible that intercourse is not occuring at the "right" time. We also have to consider the length of time you were on the pill, that could have an impact also.

Most doctors like to wait a year or two of trying (especially after any kind of hormonal birth control) before they start looking at infertility.

When was your last gyno check up? If it has been more than a year it is time to make an appointment and get all of your questions cleared up with him/her since they take a lenghty history and physical.

Well, yeah, the 5 year length could be causing a delay.

I an very glad that you are up on your appointments. Many women are not and this is vital to our health.

Any woman who makes sure they make it to their "yearly visit" is to be congratulated.

Take care and keep us posted.

It's just my opinion but I think you should wait a little while before going to the bathroom. I would recomment laying down for a little while too. I know a lot of sperm can come out when you go to the washroom, heck a lot can come out just by sitting up. Like I said, it' just my two cents. Good luck.

Actually first thing you need to do is RELAX. Enjoy making love with your partner. Worrying about getting pregnant and getting anxious about it could cause problems. From personal experiance, going to the washroom and getting up right away might actually prevent you from getting pregnant. I do not agree that going to the washroom right away is a good thing. Wait at least 20 minutes before going to the washroom after intercourse. Also after the big act you need to elevate your legs. Might not be romantic but hey it works. Keep them elevated for a while. Also position, can also have a factor in whether you become pregnant or not. Also what increases the chanches of becoming pregnant or what helps the process along is both you and your partner orgasm at the same time. Hope these tips helps and have fun with everything.

Joe

Your husband should speak to a urologist or fertility expert about the possibility of having a low sperm count and discuss possible alternatives.
