4 weeks 5 days pregnant is it normal for ultrasound to show nothing?

Hi I am new to this, but have a question. I am a little over 4 weeks pregnant and went to the emergency room yesterday due to the fact that I was having abdominal pressure. I had been very constipated and extremely gassy. Sorry if TMI. The ER doc ordered an ultrasound and saw nothing in my uterus. HCG levels are at 3100 and she told me they should have seen something with hcg levels that high. Is it normal not to see anything at 4 weeks 5 days pregnant? They kept me overnight to monitor me - making sure it is not ectopic. Very concerned. They are rechecking my bloodwork and told me it may just be too early to see anything, but they thought they should have because of hcg levels. No that gas is gone and I finally had a BM, I have no abdominal pressure. Please help.
