chlorine and pH

New to a pool and am getting very confused over how much chemical to add. I have added chlorine and the pH is 8.4 (1 pH level higher than recommended). If I add more chlorine - which mixes with water to form HCl (hydrochloric acid) it will lower the pH which is what I need. However - how much chlorine do I add? My pool contains approximately 1185 gallons / 5,377 litres. Any ideas?
