Strom Thurmond left the 1948 Democratic convention to run as the Dixiecrat or States Rights candidate. He ran with Mississippi governor Fielding Wright and won South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi in the election. He switched to the Republicans in 1964.
