What is the purpose of a syphon in a domestic drainage system
The drain from my house to the main drain was blocked recently. A drainage company carried out a sonar trace to find the buried syphon, excavated the area around it and unblocked it using a high pressure water jet to clear a 6" foul line and restored flow. They are recommending that the syphon trap be excavated and removed in order to carry out a CCTV survey and then to install new pipework including bringing the rodding access to surface level. What does all this mean? Is what they are recommending a good idea? What does it all mean? Help!

Never heard of a "siphon trap" on a sewer line. Could it be that they mean a "running Trap",(see image?)
bringing the rodding access to surface level.
All this means is that they will bring the sewer clean out to ground level.
Installing new pipe work translates to big bucks out of your pocket.
This company throws around a lot of big words. As a rule this is to confuse the home owner into signing for work he really doesn't need.
Unless there's a break in the pipe I can see no reason to replace it all.
I'm just a little leery about this company. My advice ?
    Get another estimate and compare.
    Good luck, Tom

Thank you Speedball1. I will get definitely another estimate. I wasn't sure if it was just me being thick about this. Thanks for the reassurance.
