What height should the Closet Flange Extension be, from the top of the tile/floor?

I got a “Closet Flange Extension Kit” from Home Depot and it has 2 rings. One is ¼ inch and the other is a ½ inch; so basically I want to know which one to use.

The current/original flange that is installed on the sub-floor is level with the top of the tile. The tile is just that 12” square floor tile that Home Depot sells that’s under a buck a tile, it’s not porcelain, marble or anything fancy. So I’m wondering which extension ring to use.

I measured a Flange’s thickness to see what I should be off of the floor, and it looks to be 3/8 inch thick; but the Kit does not include one of that thickness.

Sorry, not the asphalt tile, I meant the cheap ceramic (I thing it's ceramic; you put down cement/mortar and set them on it, and then grout between the cracks) tile. I forgot about the peel & stick ones.

If what you are saying is ok, then I'm set.

But I always seen those Flanges (And may I'm using the wrong word) sit on top of whatever you have as the finished floor.

I did a search on line, and I think the proper term is “Flange Hub”. The thing that screws on to the floor that the 3” ABS glues into. (Picture of what it looks like here: http://doityourself.com/store/9650714.htm )

But if I leave it as it is, I got a ¾ inch gap between the bottom of the toilet and the flange. I’ll have to measure the thickness of the wax ring I got.
