    Water leak under carpet
About 30 minutes ago I stepped on a small area of carpet and noticed it was wet. It I hadn't stepped on it, I could have easily not noticed at all, as it is small.

This wet area is about 3 feet away from my guest bathroom. Two showers were taken in the guest bathroom this weekend. The shower in the guest bathroom is rarely used (maybe 1 or 2 times a year in the 6 years I lived here), although the toilet and sink and used daily. Do you think there is a connection to the wet carpet and the shower being used over the weekend?

Is this an emergency? Will this grow and flood my house if I don't get someone to help me immediately?

Should I contact my insurance company tomorrow morning and see what they suggest I do?

    Thanks

There could be any number of things going on. If you have any suspicions of a leaky pipe, call a licensed plumber. Piping in a house can be anywhere, especially if the house is old. Gravity prohibits water from leaking up, so if there is no discoloration on the ceiling directly above where the wet spot is located or there is no trail of wet spot leading from another room and the wet spot is just in the middle of a room, it is my opinion that one of your invitees somehow wet the floor. Look above where the spot is... if you can look below where the spot is, that would be good also. If the wet spot is on the second floor, go to the first floor and see if there is any sign of wetness on the ceiling below the wet spot. You could also place a pot on top of the wet spot to catch any drips... this would indicate an issue above the spot. If you don't get any drips or accumulation of water in the pot, and there is no water stains or discoloration in the drywall above or below the wetness, it may just be a wet spot in the carpet. Check on it in a day and see if it is dry. Any animals/small children in the house?

Looks like it is due to a leaky AC.. AC unit is very near where carpet was wet and I traced it back to there.

    Thanks for your help.

That's OK! We plumbers run into this all the time. Water on thefloor? Got to be a plumbing leak! Call a plumber! AC condensate lines can build up a goo in the pipes that allows the discharge to spill out of the pan.
I carry a air bottle on my van and blow the line clear. I then close off the end of there drain and fill the line with bleach and let it set for a while. Just before I leave I drain the line. The bleach will dissolve the goo and flush it out. Good luck, Tom

Peel of the carpet. See if there is a crack in cement. Go to shower and turn water on. Go back to the room and observe the floor. See if water starts coming up. Also, it may leaking from the wall, onto the floor, and travel to the wet spot location. Let us know what you've found out...

Not that said: make it is not dog / cat pee, water drip from the ceiling ( like mentioned - AC condensation line in the attic ) or somebody spilled something in that area. Believe me or not, it happens all the time...
